Visiting the Venue and Weather Warnings

When I first got there, on 10/9/09 around 3:45 PM, it was slightly gloomy out and there was a big white tent on the [ceremony] lawn. I wandered around taking photos for a while, called a friend and chatted on the patio for a good 30 minutes, saw a hawk (and took it's photo), before heading home via the grocery store to prep and cook shabbos dinner.

The next day (Saturday the 10th), it snowed. That's not quite true, it started at about 9 PM the night before. There were about 2" total after 1.5" overnight and flurries all day. The temperature never got above 24ºF and it was COLD. Just to remind you all, that new record low (17ºF) set that day was set on our -1 year anniversary.

BE PREPARED AND CHECK THE LONG RANGE FORECAST BEFORE PACKING TO VISIT COLORADO. It would be unfortunate if you say packed a sun dress to wear to a wedding accompanied by the first snow of the year, or if you packed something fall/winter appropriate only to find it sunny and 75ºF.

David's Bridal - Taffeta jewel neck ball gown featuring side pockets.

EW9848 via David's Bridal - Taffeta jewel neck ball gown featuring side pockets. .

I can't tell if I'm really digging this dress or not. I imagine it would be great short, but would I just look like a muffin with boobs from the front? OTOH, I totally dig the back, and for $399, with the opportunity to get it on sale through next week, I might find I think I might go try it on. But GEEZ to I hate David's Bridal BARN. Ugh. It's probably more of a polyester monstrosity than a thing of beauty in person, right?

Say Yes to The Dress AKA sometimes I watch wedding porn on TV

re: Say Yes to the Dress, a reality based TV show on TLC about Kleinfeld's bridal salon in DC.

Just a short thought, but why would anyone want to wear a dress that doesn't allow them want to spin and twirl like a little girl in a fairy costume? Some of those dresses appear to weigh more than the waify  brides do!

Also, some of those women must have very rich daddies. Walking into a shop and saying that your dress budget is $5k and then walking out having spent $9k to me says that your entire wedding budget is something like 1/2 a million USD. That's WAY too rich for my blood. If I had that kind of money to spend, I'd hire a planner right now, and then just have more food and a real band instead of a DJ. I don't think we'd change much about what we have in mind right now. OK, and maybe I'd ask my parents if we'd be allowed to pocket the change too. Just saying....

Twirl factor = crucial

http://www.priscillaofboston.com/dress_detail.jsp?gid=550&sfid=50807&f=
um, I -really- like this dress. It is $1650 (about 1.5 months rent and 1/20 of our total budget) , and will be on sale in November for somewhere between 10 and 20% off. Me likey...... especially once it is ordered in a larger size and tailored to fit. The picture below is of me zipped up to my bra and then held in with a piece of cloth and some big pincer clips because my boobs were way too big for the dress. Why are they all in juniors sizing? Are brides supposed to be flat chested?

The picture is of me twirling "like Fiona" with Hannah, Becca's niece.

I kinda liked the whole ensemble, the short veil, the small tiara/headband thing.... crap, I'm turning girly!

PS- I promise not to be bridezilla. That's why I'm planning NOW, and not right before the wedding.

Wedding colors: so cheesy, but true

moss green colors

We agree on these pretty colors (from Real Simple magazine). Yey! We’re both enamored with cobalt blue water glasses on the table, like at the Ritz-Carlton (which we looked at in Tysons, but can’t afford).

I know, I know, I said we wouldn’t pick colors or do most of the cheesy wedding crap that is out there, but it will make it so much easier to think about table settings/decor if there’s a picture or at least a solid idea to share with a wedding planner/site coordinator.

Pinky swear: this will not be a thematically identifiable event. Just a wedding + party event. The hope is that no one will look at our pictures in 10 years and say "oh. so your colors were blush and bashful."

We’re registered!

We've registered for china, flatware, serving pieces and lots of other cool things on our wish lists (Bloomingdales, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Crate and Barrel). We'll add towels and bedding and other white goods in about a year.

In other news, my grandfather passed away last week. He has not been well for the past 5 years or so, so it's nice that he's no longer in pain. Seriously weird though. I miss him from before he was sick, but I missed him while he was still alive too.

My grandmother is planning to someday downsize her house, but she wants to stay for another few years out in Solomons. She loves her gardens too much to leave and she probably wants to see if the housing market will drop out anymore before she has to be selling at the bottom. Anyway, because she'll be moving from a 4 bedroom house to probably a 2-3 bedroom townhouse or condo, she said we could have whatever furniture we want! SWEET! We're also getting custody of my great grandmother's fine china (it will have to be made available for Passover every year). Wow. She's one generous gramma!
